Check and Double Check brought radio's highest-rated program to the big screen. Amos 'N' Andy were two black characters played by two white men, Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll. Donning blackface, Gosden and Correll are seen as well as heard as A&A, partners in the Harlem-based Fresh Air Taxicab Company. Our heroes spend most of their time helping the white romantic leads (Sue Carol and Charles Morton) try to locate a missing deed to some property owned by Morton's family. Eventually, Amos 'N' Andy unwittingly end up in a haunted house. Virtually the only genuine African Americans in the film are the members of Duke Ellington's Cotton Club orchestra, whose appearance at a high society ball is the device that brings A&A into the plot. Though no other Amos 'N' Andy films would follow, a popular TV series later aired in the 1950s with black actors cast in the leads. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This low-rent Disney comedy mines the Home Alone territory for labored laughs. Brian Bonsall stars as the eleven-year-old Preston Waters, who is low-kid on the family totem pole -- his father Fred (James Rebhorn) lectures him on saving his money, while his older brothers, Ralph (Michael Faustino) and Damian (Chris Demetral), are pushy bullies. The final insult arrives when Preston is invited to a friend's birthday party -- held at an amusement park -- and Preston doesn't have enough money to go on any of the good rides. Preston wishes to the gods in heaven that he had his own money. At that point, on-the-lam criminal Quigley (Miguel Ferrer) takes his cue and runs over Preston's bike with his car. Eager to leave the scene before the cops arrive, Quigley hurriedly gives Preston a half-written check and vamooses. Preston looks down at the check and notices that the amount has not been filled in, so he obligingly completes the transaction by adding six zeroes and a one -- for a million dollars in cold cash. This amount, by a strange coincidence, happens to be the exact amount that Quigley has deposited in a money-laundering bank run by his partner-in-crime Biderman (Michael Lerner). Preston goes to the bank, cashes the check, and purchases a neighborhood mansion with all the toys he has ever dreamed of owning. But Quigley and his gang want the money back, and they are on their way to Preston's new home for a housewarming he will never forget. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi
Take a compelling look at one of the biggest beefs in modern hip-hop with an informative documentary detailing the feud that erupted between Lil' Kim and Junior M.A.F.I.A. in the wake of their 2002 break-up. For three years the ongoing conflict continued to fester until a fateful firefight outside of New York City radio station "Hot 97" found Lil' Kim slapped with Federal Grand Jury charges in 2005. Subsequently found guilty of perjury after claiming that she didn't know the shooters, Lil' Kim faced twenty-five years in prison despite ultimately being sentenced to only one year and one day. Now the true story of that fateful conflict finally comes into focus as journalist, MTV personality, and radio DJ Sway sits down for an exclusive interview in which the diminutive hip-hop starlet dishes out all the details fans have been waiting to hear. Court transcripts and commentary featuring the words of Snoop Dogg, Jadakiss, and more offer another perspective on the events that unfolded, and new music from both Junior M.A.F.I.A. and Notorious B.I.G., sets the tone for an exclusive look into a near-fatal hip-hop feud. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

He plays a variety of tunes, including "Wabash Cannonball," "Blackberry Blossom," and "Sally Goodin," while carefully explaining how he elicits such incredible bluegrass sounds from his guitar. ~ Elizabeth Smith, Rovi

This profile of controversial figure Julian Assange, creator of the infamous website Wikileaks, which provides a forum to make confidential documents from world governments viewable to the public at large. Heralded by some as a hero, Assange has also been called an opportunist and a megalomaniac by critics. ~ Cammila Albertson, Rovi
Although it will register low on the mainstream radar, the sophomore album by ex-Company Flow member Bigg Jus is a hip-hop diamond--raw, rough-hewn, and intelligent. Bigg Jus spits imaginative, fiercely political rhymes over beats and samples that are as inventive and engaging as any in hip-hop. Along with contemporaries like El-P and Aesop Rock, Bigg Jus is bringing hip-hop back to its roots as a forum for reportage and truth-speaking. Fans of Jay-Z and 50 Cent should steer clear--there are no club jams here, no singable R&B hooks (though DJ Gman does keep things booming). Instead, POOR PEOPLE'S DAY is hardcore, rebellious, underground hip-hop of consequence that represents the genre's potential as a political forum.
Four years after Light triumphed at L's grave, he's taken on the persona of the "new L" and become an officer in the National Police Agency. When Kira uses fear and power to gain control of the entire world, L's successor Near uses the forum of the SPK to name her as the new embodiment of L, and implore the Japanese Task Force to snuff out Light before its too late. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Skip James.Producer: Arnold S. CaplinReissue Producer: Arnold S. Caplin.Liner Note Author: Brett J. Bonner.Photographer: Michael Ochs.Hard Time Killing Floor Blues was the first session Skip James recorded following his rediscovery by John Fahey and Henry Vestine in the mid-'60s. Though he had not played the blues for more than 20 years, his skills were largely undiminished, and he turns in a fantastic set here. James was the pinnacle of the Bentonia (Mississippi) sound, which combines complex fingerpicking with falsetto vocals, resulting in somewhat spooky-sounding strain of blues. James reprises several of his 1931 Paramount sides on this session, as well as a couple new tunes that chronicle the illnesses of James' latter days. Anyone with a passing interest in acoustic blues should own some James. This set would make a great starting point, especially for those who don't take well to the surface noise that can accompany his '30s sessions. The new mastering here sounds rich and warm. Highly recommended. [This set was previously released as Biograph 122, with a different running order.] ~ Sean Westergaard

Dag Nasty: Roger Marbury (vocals, bass); Dave Smalley (vocals); Dale Nixon (guitars); Colin Sears (drums).Engineers: Donnell Cameron, Joe Pecarillo, Serious Bob.Recorded at Westbeach Recorders, Hollywood, California.Composers: Dag Nasty; Harper; Garratt; U.K. Subs.Personnel: Dave Smalley, Roger Marbury (vocals); Dale Nixon (guitar); Colin Sears (drums).Engineers: Donnell Cameron; Serious Bob; Joe Peccerillo.Recording information: Westbeach Recorders, Hollywood, CA.Photographer: Bob Reed.Unknown Contributor Role: Dag Nasty.Various members of the now defunct emocore originals Dag Nasty reunited after a four-year split to produce an album in true punk fashion. Recorded in about two weeks and produced by Epitaph mastermind Brett Gurewitz, Four on the Floor found Dag Nasty drawing from their influential past to give die-hard fans an updated taste of the positive-minded punk they spearheaded in the '80s alongside fellow Dischord bands Minor Threat, Soulside, and Fugazi, to name a few. The album's liner notes referenced the fact that this was a one-off, semi-coincidental occurrence, and this spontaneous resurrection captured the early fun and fury of Dag Nasty in their glory. Key members Dave Smalley, Colin Sears, and Roger Maybury lent authenticity to the effort, and due to his contract while in Junkyard, Brian Baker could not use his real name during this "reunion" record. Humorously he went under the pseudonym "Dale Nixon," but make no mistake about it - that is Baker playing guitar on this record. Gurewitz's production sometimes fell short of representing Dag Nasty's true musical voice, occasionally sounding a bit thin for hardcore. But on tracks like "Million Days" and "S.F.S.," Dag Nasty managed to recapture their original musical intensity and simultaneously spotlighted Dave Smalley's continued growth as a writer. "We Went Wrong" revisited staple Dag Nasty themes of frustration and betrayed trust, and sounded as aggressive and fresh as any of their early work. The spirit of spontaneity showed through on the speedy but ultimately goofy "Roger," and the raucous cover of the U.K. Subs' classic "Lie Down and Die" paid respect to their punk influences. Four on the Floor wasn't necessarily essential for casual fans of the genre, but it definitely provided Dag Nasty diehards with a revisited but worthy glimpse into their short-lived but fiery career. ~ Paul Henderson
HARD CANDY continues in the driving, club-oriented vein of 2005's CONFESSIONS ON A DANCE FLOOR, proving that Madonna has lost none of her energy and verve with age. In terms of material, in fact, HARD CANDY bests its predecessor, and the artist continues to make herself relevant in the 2000s by adding distinctly hip-hop grooves to her increasingly electronica-driven sound. Remarkably, the result never sounds like a blatant commercial appeal. As with nearly everything she's done, this groove-heavy disc is distinctly Madonna's own.The Material Girl sculpted her sound this time out by hiring some of the hottest producers on the scene, including Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, and Pharrell and the Neptunes. Cuts like the lead-off single, "4 minutes" (a duet with Timberlake), and the thumping, sexy title track sparkle with a contemporary club feel, begging listeners to turn it up and shake it. Yet Madonna's classic pop sensibilities are far from lost in the mix. "Beat Goes On" recalls vintage singles like "Holiday"; "Heartbeat" is sleek, singalong Europop; and "Miles Away" is a love song that rides a sweet midtempo groove. Fun, danceable, and infectious, HARD CANDY is another winner from one of pop's all-time icons.
