Is it cost effective? Is it practical? Is it durable.

I have one. I like it.
Te good- It's nice because it goes by itself. I think it picks up the dirt very well and is great for my house where I have carpet and tile- it does both with no problem. And it has these great sensors to keep it in or out of certain places. You can move the sensors as needed. You can also get its own homing base and when it's tired, it gets back on the base and charges.
The bad- it is really noisy and it does get stuck on rugs or under the bed quite often. You really have to take care of it too- clean all the brushes and empty both dirt chambers after every 3 cleans. Sometimes it can be difficult- like it will go over and over one area and completely miss others- I resolve that by picking it up and moving it. And sometimes it can't get itself out of a tight spot, like under the kitchen table and you can hear it banging away under there.
But it is nice to not really have to vacumn anymore!

I was thinking about getting a irobot roomba but most of the rooms in my house have .5 to 1 inch bumps in the door way so I don't know if it can go over that or down it but if it cant then can the roomba have many chargers and just go to the closest one?

Oh I love my Roomba, I just let him loose when we go out and when we come back he's done the whole downstairs. Charge him back up, next time we go out, I stick him upstairs and he does all that too.
Sometimes he gets tangled up or stuck and he plays a sad little tune that we call "Help, I need you...", but mostly he just cleans. The dogs are so use to him that he bumps against them when they are sleeping and they don't even bother to get up and move, they know he'll find his way around them, lol
