Doctor Who: Robot - $14.99 Includes:Doctor Who: Robot, Episode 1 (1974) Doctor Who: Robot, Episode 2 (1975) Doctor Who: Robot, Episode 3 (1975) Doctor Who: Robot, Episode 4 (1975) Doctor Who: Robot, Episode 1 In the final episode of Doctor Who's 11th season, the Doctor endured a crisis of conscience, one so profound that he was forced into another of his periodic regenerations. In this way, Jon Pertwee was able to leave the series, to make way for the Fourth Doctor, who in turn was unveiled in the 12th-season opener, episode one of "Robot" (which was also the first of the series' story continuities to be shot completely on videotape, with no filmed sequences). Tom Baker took over the role of the Doctor, spending the bulk of the episode getting accustomed to his new body. While resting from his labors, the new Doctor falls asleep for a few minutes -- just enough time for a robot to steal the plans for a valuable disintegrator gun, thereby setting the plot proper in motion. First telecast on December 28, 1974, the first episode of the four-part "Robot" was written by Terrance Dicks. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide Doctor Who: Robot, Episode 2 In the second episode of the four-part story "Robot," the Doctor (Tom Baker) tries to help the Brigadier (Nicholas Courtney) solve a series of crimes, all related to the disappearance of a new disintegrator gun. The Doctor's companion, Sarah (Elisabeth Sladen), believes that a robot is responsible for the crime wave -- and this insight may prove fatal to her. First telecast on January 4, 1975, "Robot, Episode 2" was written by Terrance Dicks. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide Doctor Who: Robot, Episode 3 In the third episode of the four-part story "Robot," the Doctor (Tom Baker) and Sarah (Elisabeth Sladen) has discovered that the robot which stole a new disintegrator gun had been programmed to do so by Hilda Winters (Patricia Maynard), director of the research organization Think Tank. It was the organization's intention to use the gun, and the robot, to start a nuclear war, and then emerge as conquerors of the devastated world. Will the Doctor be able to thwart this scheme -- and will Sarah be able to escape death at the hands of the robot? First telecast on January 11, 1975, "Robot, Episode 2" was written by Terrance Dicks. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide Doctor Who: Robot, Episode 4 In the conclusion of the four-part story "Robot," the members of Think Tank have hidden themselves in a bunker, preparing for the nuclear holocaust which they themselves have planned. It falls to the Doctor (Tom Baker) to shatter Think Tank's dreams of world domination. But is the Doctor, now encased within a new body and endowed with a whole new personality, up to the present challenge? Ian Marter joins the regular cast in the role of Harry Sullivan. First telecast on January 11, 1975, "Robot, Episode 4" was written by Terrance Dicks. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide |

His mother, Bernice Chin (Wai Ching Ho), tries to connect with him by repairing his old collection of toy robots. Her obsessive quest to find missing robot parts is observed by her daughter Grace (Cindy Cheung). In "Machine Love," a Sprout G9 iPerson (Greg Pak) is introduced to an office environment. Later, while napping, he has a dream -- that the Earth has been attacked by an alien named Ro-Man (played by George Barrows in a gorilla suit with a diving helmet), using the "calcinator death ray," and that he and his family (with Mylong and his mother now married) and scientist Nader are the only survivors. They try to elude capture by Ro-Man, who turns out to have some very human failings despite his mechanized mentality, including a desire to experience human emotions, which greatly complicates his efforts to destroy the family. ~ Bruce Eder, All Movie Guide |

I, Robot - Widescreen Collector's Dubbed $14.99 Director Alex Proyas (Dark City, The Crow) helmed this sci-fi thriller inspired by the stories in Isaac Asimov's nine-story anthology of the same name. I, Robot / Independence Day [2 Discs / BTB] - Limited $19.99 Includes:Independence Day (1996), MPAA Rating: PG-13 I, Robot (2004), MPAA Rating: PG-13 Independence Day A group of intrepid humans attempts to save the Earth from vicious extraterrestrials in this extremely popular science-fiction adventure. Borrowing liberally from War of the Worlds, Aliens, and every sci-fi invasion film inbetween, director Roland Emmerich and producer and co-writer Dean Devlin present a visually slick, fast-paced adventure filled with expensive special effects and large-scale action sequences. The story begins with the approach of a series of massive spaceships, which many on Earth greet with open arms, looking forward to the first contact with alien life. Unfortunately, these extraterrestrials have not come in peace, and they unleash powerful weapons that destroy most of the world's major cities. Thrown into chaos, the survivors struggle to band together and put up a last-ditch resistance in order to save the human race. As this is a Hollywood film, this effort is led by a group of scrappy Americans, including a computer genius who had foreseen the alien's evil intent (Jeff Goldblum), a hot-shot jet pilot (Will Smith), and the President of the United States (Bill Pullman). While some critics objected to the film's lack of originality and lapses in logic, the combination of grand visual spectacle and crowd-pleasing storytelling proved irresistible to audiences, resulting in an international smash hit. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide I, Robot Director Alex Proyas (Dark City, The Crow) helmed this sci-fi thriller inspired by the stories in Isaac Asimov's nine-story anthology of the same name. Plan 9 From Outer Space / Robot Monster [2 Pack] - $12.99 Includes:Robot Monster (1953) Plan 9 from Outer Space (1956) Robot Monster A young boy named Johnny (Gregory Moffett) is on a picnic with his widowed mother (Selena Royle) and sister (Claudia Barrett), when he meets a pair of archeologists (John Mylong, George Nader) exploring a nearby cave. ~ Bruce Eder, All Movie Guide Plan 9 from Outer Space With its incoherent plot, jaw-droppingly odd dialogue, inept acting, threadbare production design, and special effects so shoddy that they border on the surreal, Plan 9 From Outer Space has often been called the worst movie ever made. But it's an oddly endearing disaster; boasting genuine enthusiasm and undeniable charm, it is the work of people who loved movies and loved making them, even if they displayed little visible talent. In Plan 9, alien invaders attempt to conquer the world by raising the dead, starting with an old man dressed in a Dracula costume (Bela Lugosi, in a few minutes of left-over footage grafted into this film), his much-younger and well-proportioned wife (Maila "Vampira" Nurmi), and a remarkably overweight police officer (Tor Johnson). Often funny and consistently entertaining (if almost always for the wrong reasons), Plan 9 From Outer Space is an anti-masterpiece if there ever was one, and as Criswell so brilliantly puts it, "Can you PROVE it didn't happen?!?" Its legendary director Edward D. Wood Jr. was played by Johnny Depp in Tim Burton's 1994 biopic, Ed Wood. One of the DVD releases of Plan 9 From Outer Space includes the documentary Flying Saucers Over Hollywood: The Plan 9 Companion, an exhaustive and entertaining look at the making of the film that runs a half-hour longer than the feature to which it pays tribute! ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide |
