What's wrong with my Roomba?
I have an iRobot Roomba that is less than 2 years old. (Pretty basic model.) Recently it no longer wants to run. At first it would run for 30-60 sec then stop and give me a tone. Now its just giving me the tone as soon as I hit clean. The tone sounds unfamiliar to me (not the normal "uh oh" tone) - the tone is low-high-high-low. There are no beeps after the tone plays. The clean light is green until it gives me the tone then it blinks red. I have cleaned out the brushes and emptied the bin and the filter part. The wheels seem fine. I really cannot determine what could be wrong. Does anyone have any ideas or has experienced anything like this?
I have checked the manual that came with it. Like I said in the original post - the tone is not the normal "uh-oh" tone which I have experienced in the past & have been able to diagnose and there are no beeps after the tone.
My next guess would be the battery, they are not cheap, do you have a vacuum repair place nearby? Good chance they will have batteries or maybe even let you try one. The manual is available at their site and it explains what the beeps mean.

Robot vacuum cleaners have the advanced ability to navigate through your house automatically. With the touch of button and small help, these automatic cleaners scientifically and efficiently approach a variety of flooring materials, with varying levels of dirt. The latest models of smart bots vacuum the floors, commit to memory the house layout, clean the dust from their bin and then return to their charging station.
Although there are several models for sale, robotic vacuums are typically small and close to the floor in order to get under obstacles. Even as little as they are, these robots receive good marks on the quantity of dust, animal fur and crumbs they clean. Electorlux, Karcher and Lentek also have automatic vacuum cleaners available today. They can range in price from $110 to $1800.
These vacuum cleaners use conventional vacuum technology with their filters, brushes and suction; they just add the smarts of a robotic brain in order to have autonomy. The vacuums run on a rechargeable NiMH battery. A completely charged vacuum will clean for roughly two hours. The movement system is made up of two motor-driven, tracked wheels or rollersthat steer by alternating the power supplied to each tire. A spinning side brush and subordinate side brush, and an agitator and opening allow the unit to pick up dirt. Most vacuum cleaners also have dust sensors. This allows the robotic nature of the vacuum to decide whether an area is especially soiled or needs additional care. The Roomba has an added side brush attached to the front fender. The waste bin needs to be emptied every 1-3 cleaning cycles for max efficiency. It is also useful to keep the brushes clean for perfect performance.
The robot vacuum uses an auto-navigation system. Most navigate with infrared signals, but the high-end Electrolux Tribulite uses sonar to navigate. Often the first thing a robotic vacuum does when beginning to wash is calculate the room size by sending out an infrared signal and seeing how long it takes to bounce back. Then, the vacuum can figure out how long it will take to wash a room. The multiple sensors pick up environmental information and transmit it to the robots microprocessor. IRobot reports that its system can attune to new input up to 67 times per second. This technology permits the vacuums to practically think and make calls.
in addition to the infrared receiver, robotic vacuums have cliff sensors ( for drop-offs and stairs ), object sensors and wall sensors. In this fashion, the vacuum cleans without bumping into objects or ending up stuck at walls or by furniture. Once a robotic vacuum hits an obstacle it cleans near it or turns and starts a new path ; the concept is that if it cleans for a set period of time, it will eventually cover the majority of the floor.
On some robot vacuums there is a low noise switch so that the vacuum can clean at night without disturbing you. However, most robotic cleaners still make a certain quantity of noise. Sensors in the vacuum detect when the floor type changes ( wood floor to carpet ) and instantly adjust the height of the vacuum. In truth, it will adjust with only a half-inch difference in the floor it is cleaning. Complicated anti-tangle design keeps the vacuum from becoming caught on fancy rugs or electrical cords. The robotic vacuums are made to be problem-free, but small objects need to be lifted from the cleaning surface. For example, you could program the vacuum to go to work each monday at 9 hundred a.m.
The robotic vacuum, Roomba went on sale in 2002 by iRobot. There are now a spread of models, with varying costs on the market. The idea that you can leave the vacuum to wash while you leave the house to run errands or watch a picture is popular. Plus, the boring of chore of vacuuming can turn into a daily event with a robotic vacuum.
